A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING BOY SCOUT TROOP 2 OF PICAYUNE ON THE CELEBRATION OF ITS 80TH ANNIVERSARY ON FEBRUARY 28, 1999.

WHEREAS, Boy Scout Troop 2, which was founded in 1919, will celebrate its 80th Anniversary at the Scout Sunday worship service on February 28, 1999; and

WHEREAS, sponsored by the First United Methodist Church of Picayune for the past 25 years, Troop 2 is the second oldest troop in the State of Mississippi and one of the oldest in the Southeast; and

WHEREAS, many of the Troop 2 Scouts have been awarded the God and Church Award for religious activities, and the First United Methodist Church conducts a Scout Sunday service every February in recognition of Scouting month; and

WHEREAS, Troop 2 has produced more than the average number of Eagle Scouts, including nine from last year and two Eagle Scouts who will be acknowledged on Scout Sunday; and

WHEREAS, Troop 2 has been involved in several community projects such as the restoration of the Red Hill Cemetery, the renovation of the Greater Picayune Chamber of Commerce building, the building of park benches for Jack Read Park and the benches for the playground of the church; and

WHEREAS, Troop 2 is composed of Scouts who have become distinguished professionals such as doctors, lawyers, law officers, merchants, airline pilots, actors, a state legislator, a rare stamp expert, the Doorkeeper of the Congress of the United States, teachers, retired military officers, ministers and many Scoutmasters; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the young people of our state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Boy Scout Troop 2 of Picayune, Mississippi, on the celebration of its 80th Anniversary on February 28, 1999, and extend to them our heartiest wishes of success in all their future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Boy Scout Troop 2, the First United Methodist Church of Picayune and members of the Capitol Press Corps.
